I have tried my level best to translate the instructions for setting the folder permissions, which are written for win 2000 , to XP Pro - to no evail.

Could someone help step me through this for XP?

Thanks in advance.

It's more or less the same on XP, but you need to turn off simple file sharing from the folder options in the control panel.

Yeah, I did that, but when I get to step 6, that's where it begins to fall apart for me.

In the properties dialogue box for the folder 'database', under the security tab, I have two entries to start off with and both have been given all but full control. The entries are 'ASP.NET Machine Account ( AG083922\ASPNET )' and 'My Name ( mailto:username@domain.com - username@domain.com  ) '

This is where I'm stumped. When trying to view the default.asp page, this is my error.

Error Type:
Microsoft JET Database Engine (0x80004005)
The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'C:\forum\admin\database\wwForum.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.
/forum/common.asp, line 249

You need to give read, write, permissions to the IUSR_machineName account.

Where machineName replace this with the name of your own computer.

Well, the closest I can find to IUSR_machineName  is IUSR_mypassword.  I typed in IUSR and clicked check names and IUSR_machineName is not in the list, but IUSR_mypassword was.  Nonethless, it didn't work.

Also, I have made sure that simple file sharing is turned off.

Stumped!

Interesting Note**  Before messing with the permissions, I was able to get the index page to come up.  I then tried to go into admin and ofcourse that is where I got my first 500 error, but after that I can't get the index page back up.

boRg,

I figured it out!

This forum application is really nice.  I admire the willingness to share it with people. I will be making a donation.

I just did it, but i have a cookie problem, so i don't know if it works :)

I did this:

right click folder -->properties

Sharing tab --> Share this folder

Permissions button --> Add

Then i've pressed advanced, object types and selected groups and users

Find now.

Then somewhere it says IUSR_mymachine

press okay en set allow :)

Dunno if it works, but if it works, let me know please :)

Good Luck

Yes, that sounds about right.

I went to the database folder right clicked --> went to Security --> then clicked add --> then clicked the button to the right, Object Types --> then selected group or user (can't remember which) --> and then typed in IUSR_mymachine name --> then clicked check names --> and it found it.

Interesting point!  After I got the forum running I moved it to another computer (Server).  Evidently, the database folder retained these settings because I didn't have to mess with it again.  It worked straight away. I only needed to adjust the path to the forum within the configuration options.
