japan is right but is not quite as big. Though the number 2 computer has been built in the US consiting of a few (2-3) thousand Apple G5 processors. I think it is in the range of a few 100 Terra Flops. I read an article about it somewhere and may be wrong on the numbers...

I think this question needs clarification.

1) Fastest NETWORKED computing system

OR

2) Fastest single computer BOX

If it is 1, then it may be likely that the above answers are all wrong. There are several networks running medical and cryptographic problems and they are distributed world-wide. However, their computing power (flops) varies over time.

You can get more info by looking up "cracking DES" or stuff like that.

If it is number 2, then likely the answer will be something like "Cray" this or that or something.

Creating a "super-computer cluster" is relatively easy (Google for "beowulf" etc.). The system in the US with the Apple G5's was created in no time. They had originally planned a different system, but when number came in telling them that they could do it for a fraction of the price with Apple computers, they pulled up their sleeves and went to town. The rest is history.

But not a fast download... I'm crawling at about 40 KB/s...

They cooled a P4 to -196 using liquid nitrogen. They set a new world record @ 5255 Mhz. Wonder what benchmarks you could set using a Radeon 9800 XT and such a system...

who ever though that dumping liquid nitrogen would speed up your processor

Speed of a processor is variable on a number of things:

  • Resistance in wiring
  • How compact processor design is
  • Voltage running through processor

Higher the voltage, faster the processor (as far as I know, but I am starting to think im completely wrong).  So, higher voltage means a hot processor, the hot processor if its too hot will melt!  So pouring liquid nitrogen cools it down, enabling higher voltages.

I think I want one of http://www.cray.com/media/2003/november/top500_nov03.html - these ... maybe 2...

Might need to consider moving to a bigger place though... my spare junk room is a bit clogged at the moment...

I think the first sentence in this http://www.cray.com/products/systems/x1/CrayX1ProductSheet_pdfonly.pdf - PDF says it all...
