Hello!

This issue was bugging me for a very long time. I know that as a webmaster, I can create many kinds of online applications that use databases etc.. But not once I found myself in a situation that I or someone else was in need of an application (the kind that I can make online) but will come in a format of an offline program.

For example, my dad is leading a certain company, and he asked me numerous times to create price offers for his customers. I always did it with Word, but the need for my dad to do these documents quickly and easily by himself grew more and more. I know that I am able to create an online application in ASP which can be used to make price offers (ie create offer, add products to it, specify quantities, write comments etc.). But I don't need this application to be online. I want to access it without using the internet, and I want to be able to activate it on computers without internet support (and WITHOUT local intranet servers like IIS and PWS).

I know this is hardcore(?) programming that I'm talking about, but I'm so puzzled, I don't know where and how should I start, and how will my knowledge in database driven ASP applications be able to help me??

well if you don't have IIS or PWS installed you need to either program a database like access or write yourself a windows application. If you know asp it may be enough to create a quick a dirty app in vb.net for example to do what you want.

or you could write an asp.net page and run it off cassini (a tiny asp.net webserver its only 30kb) which doesnt need to be installed. you can get it from source projects on http://www.asp.net - www.asp.net

If you're not looking for an internet solution, but only want to write an application that you can distribute to PC's, check out vb.net.

For around $100 US, It can build both internet and distributable PC apps and since vb is the foundation language for asp, it'll be something you can relate to.

If you're familiar enough with asp to get 100 posts here, you'll have that pc app built in a week or two.

Dypers, it sounds good I'm interested in that. Can it work with databases like ASP does?

Also, I couldn't find what you've described on the vb.net website. They have a bunch of stuff FOR vb.net, but not the thing itself (not that I found anyway).

VB is great if you know ASP.  I was in the same position as you, VB can do everything ASP can do as far as I know.  It will take you about a couple of days to familiarise yourself with VB, but you will pick it up very quickly.
