If its an access DB then no, the Db must be on the same server as the scripts. You could use the SQL Server edition and have a remote SQL server but if you want access the forum needs local access to the DB.

What's the point of reading from two data bases but only updating one of them? One of the DB's wouldn't have anything in it.

You may want to think about breaking up the sections of your forum into multiple forums that run on different sites. People would have to register for each site.

  1. If you have different logins for each of your accounts, it probably won't work.
  2. You can't.

if you have read and write access to both accounts from one account, you could place the database in one account and the script in the other.. use physical path to the database then.. but you cant connect to a database on another server, unless theyre placed in a cluster where all works as one..

no buy the server build that way:

somebody host is site, the server give him directory in d:/freehostxx/user

lets say that i create acuat name "shay" and another acuant name "shay 1"...now my forum is on "shay" and the forum is in the root directory of "shay", i changw the path to the db to: ../../freehostxx/shay 1/admin/database/wwforum.mdb

it's possible?

why not just use the physical path to the database?

The parent path for each of your accounts may look the same, but there's no guarantee that they are on the same server.

Accounts are separate entities, you can not go up one account's domain  path and over to another account. IIS prohibits that or else I'd be able to go from my account over to your account.

If you have multiple webroots (domains) under one account, you can go up the path, but not over to another webroot. If you put your db in a directory above the webroots in the path, both webroots can hit it.

In your account, can you have more than one website? Or do you need a different account for each website?

If you need different accounts for each website, you won't be able to share a path between them.

Got that right!

I signed up with them to check it out, but they seem to have a delay of some hours before sending the login/password. Apparently I can't pick my own when I register. Just hope they're not spam harvesters.

Just got the email and setup http://www.websamba.com/dpyers - http://www.websamba.com/dpyers

They do not allow you to have any directories above the root web space and you can only have one site per account, so you can't share a database between sites that way.

Just a tip...

You'll have to have your access data base in your webspace. This means that anyone who knows what application you're running can figure out where to go to download it.

To prevent this, rename your database from mydatabase.mdb to mydatabase.asp. Change any references to it in the code to end in .asp as well.

The code can still read/write to it as an access database no matter what you name it. By naming it with .asp, if anyone tries to download it, the webserver will try to serve it up as an asp script, and the user will get an error.
