I would like for one of my clients to be able to edit her web page in Word. She has Word 2002. Please take a look at http://www.neamp.org/default3.htm - http://www.neamp.org/default3.htm . When I edit this web page in Word 2003, the buttons will not be underlined when you put your mouse on them anymore. I certainly don't want this to happen. Can someone please tell me how I can prevent this from happening again?  I use Fireworks and Dreamweaver to edit my web pages. But this client will be using Word to edit the web pages.

Word is the worst program you can possibly edit an HTML page with. The only way to make a web page fully editable in Word is to make it on Word.

Editing web pages with Word is akin to playing frisbee with a hammer... futile and painful.

Tell your client the truth, that Word is a very bad, bad, bad, bad idea. A more literal and accurate example: try to edit MP3 files with a hex editor. Yes... it can be done... if you are a masochist.

MadDog, I would disagree with Word being the "worst"... simply because Excel exists

I don't use Word to edit the HTML pages. This client needs a way to edit some of the web pages. I use Dreamweaver and Interdev to edit my pages.

Are there any free HTML editors that my client might be able to download? I was thinking about the possibility of having her edit the pages in Notepad. I can do this fine. But I know that my client probably doesn't know anything or just a little about HTML Code. My client mainly just needs to edit the content.

I'm a little confused... HTML pages are the SAME as web pages...

but as for HTML editors, there are many of them... http://www.editplus.com - http://www.editplus.com for one...

I know that Notepad will not work well for my client. I think she needs something very visible. I thought that it would work well in Word. One of the web pages she edited before worked well in Word except for the fact that it left some red dots.

Is there possibly any way that I can keep the buttons underlined in Word? I wish that I had known how bad Word was at editing HTML pages before. I am thinking about the possibility of using the Rich Web Wiz Guide Text Editor for my client to edit pages. The client will find out that it is from Web Wiz Guide because there will be a link to Web Wiz Guide on the bottom of the web page. That is fine. It will not be for the public to see though. The goal is for my client to be able to edit the content. I could have the content stored in a database. What do you think about this idea?

Just install one of the many online HTML editors for him/her. Check on aspin.com there are tons.

RTE is just one of many editors that can be used. There's even an example on the MS site for writing your own using their mshtml compnent. One thing that I've found helpful is to give clients a page that allows them to pull up and edit specific inlude files. This lets them vary content, while keeping the rest of the site intact. Kind of minimises the damage they can do.

You could save the includes to a db, but I usually keep them as separate files because I do backups when they go into edit on a page, and then allow them to select from a list of backups if they need to restore. Just a lot simpler with files than with a db. Easier to trim the older ones out as well using conventional tools.
