Just a few questions...

What would be the average pay on a project for a web designer and a web developer?

Also does anyone know salary on a 'per page' basis?

it'd kinda help if you mentioned "where", as that is the number one factor on pay (cost of living)

for instance, a 50k/year job in Florida might be a 75k/year job in California due to how much more expensive it is to live out in Cali...

i'd probbaly sign up for a site like monster.com and look through some of the job postings to get an idea of what people make and where

well... you could start out by charging  $500-$600 per hour, and then move your way up.

If I were you, I would just set an hourly rate (based on your skill level) and go from there...

In the United Kingdom most decent web designers charge from about £300 per hour

"In the United Kingdom most decent web designers charge from about £300 per hour"

I never charge by the hour, because I dont think you could really prove how much time you did spend on a page, i.e your front page you might of spent 2-3 hours and that means you have already charged £900,

So i would suggest charge by the page for a normal page (a few graphics) £40

For Heavy Graphical page £60 a

And for Flash you decide

That is how much I charge Departments at my school to make their intranet websites, that is if they want custom scripts etc. For normal websites I don't charge much less than that. I was advised to charged that amount by one of my IT teachers who said that was how much decent designers charged. I am surprised so many of you are schoked by these prices.

My problem is I don't have enough time to accept all my possible contracts!

If you had to pay for WWG then I am sure that you would already be retired. I know the maker of the PHP Forum, VBulletin. e has done very well for him self.

However, if that were the case, it would not be nice for everyone who uses WWG and it would be a completly different community.

I admire people who create useful Free Applications like WWG far more than people who make millions out of selling their work.

Berkshire.  London prices are usually higher than Berkshire. You wil find that in the real world (in other words out side of my school) it helps if you are company and can give people invoices.

What is the conversion rate from pounds to US right now (approximately)?

I am a fledging designer, but I have a fairly simple method for my pricing. I base my rate on a $45/hour scale (since I do most of the work myself). When a client has a website need, I give them 2 options:

  • I can charge a flat hourly rate
  • I estimate how many hours I think it will take x $45 = flat fee

For instance, a client wants to update the color scheme. Depending on the website, that may take less than an hour. Since there is a 1 hour minimum charge, then I would invoice for $45. However, if there are grapics/logos to consider in the update, then it could take many hours, which could be cost prohibitive to the client. In that case I would be flexible and go with a flat fee that is based on estimated time and what I think the client will be comfortable with.

Keep in mind that I try to target small businesses without huge budgets. Flexibilty is the key since every project has its own quirks and needs. One of my sales pitches is that websites should NOT be cost prohibitive for small businesses.

Accounting software is everyone that you can use to invoice. Anyone half-arse good with Word and Excel doesn't really have to have accounting software, although it makes it easier.
