We have all got this

General error Unable to open registry key
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x6cc Thread 0x78c DBC 0x144cfc4 Jet'.

but why do I get it only sometimes? If I develop an asp database access page and hit the database when I forgot to close the access application I get the message and I also sometimes get it on my hosted web sites?

It seems to be a session based problem cos when I call tech support they can never find anything wrong.

Any ideas?

Kevin

This is usually when you specifie the wrong location of the database in the connection string.

Yes but it happens when I dont change anything.

Like this morning a customer called to say he could not see his site. When I checked i got this message. But i have not updatd anything for ages. Then it worked ok later on.....

If you are running access db, check to make sure your .ldb file is disappearing from the server.  Sometimes the connection to the DB doesnt timeout properly and that ldb file will stay on the server.  When another person tries to use the db, they will get the message you are getting - its a write permissions error (or can be).  It's not a write problem permissions wise, it means your server is trying to open two copies of the DB at one time.  It's actually not a problem with the forum it is a problem with the jet drivers for Win2K & IIS.  You can download a patch from the MSDN.

You may also want to do a compact and repair on the db.
