Hi there,

I posted in the Classic ASP Section about learning ASP or ASP.NET and they say ASP.NET is the way forward. I have scanned the net for some good tutorials/ downloads. And cant really find anything useful they all have links like Tutorials and Snippets then have great big pages of stuff but no START HERE.

Anyone know of any cool sites/ downloads? And why dont you have sticky topic like in the ASP classic for cool sites!

Thanks

Dave.

Right i am going to take a serious look at those sites - no doubt you'll hear from me shortly asking help LOL.

Thanks.

Dave.

http://www.asp.net - www.asp.net has "Starter Kits" for about 5 different types of apps. Load one up and start hacking at it to suite your needs. Good way to jump right in. Each kit has a support forum as well.
Helpful group of people there.

You will have to decide which language suites you best first. There's VB.NET C#.NET (pronounced csharp) J#.NET and C++.NET [you can get more if your prefered language isnt on there, I would avoid using J#.NET because some hosts/clients do not have the CLR installed]

hrmm J# kinda like the Jrun applet of Coldfusion?
or am i thinking of something else?

VB.NET = Visual Basic
C#.NET = C++
C++.NET = C++
J#.NET = JAVA

LOL- Umm what if i said I am not good at anything but html - i only very sketchy bits abouts asp 3.0. I know html well, now i want to diversify into another language that could make mine and my friends sites more better. As i use WWF on them and they are done in asp i thought i would try my hand at that.... the asp classic thread say do asp.net as its the future so i should learn that.

Seems like most of the major freeware packages are being done in C#.

ASP.Net is more than just ASP on steroids. ASP has about a half dozen classes - e.g. response.xxxxx, ASP.NET has 3700+. As noted, understanding the framework/how the classes work is the big thing. The language is secondary. The 2004 version due out later this year is supposed to be extremely devloper friendly.

I learnt it by trying it.

7 months ago I didn't know a thing about asp.Net but now i've built my project in asp.net and my second marker says i've got a first class project . I started with Sams teach youreslf asp.net in 24 hours. that teaches you the very basics and helps you to start as a beginner. After a while it becomes useless because as time goes on you start to master more tricks not covered in the book.

But I have to say the book layed a very good foundation for me.

I started with ASP.NET for dummies and ASP.NET unleashed. The dummies book was good for the wuick onver view and simple examples - e.g. this is how you do post back, handle view state, update a db, eat a web service, etc.

ASP.NET unleased is really awsome. On my second copy - wore out the first. The author, Stephen Walther, is a regular at http://www.asp.net - www.asp.net and wrote one of the starter kits. The book is just full of tips, tricks and examples ranging from simple to very sophistivatd.
