Subject: I hate incomplete subject line on topics
Date Posted: 12 February 2004 at 11:20am

WE are all strapped for time, and I don't have time to sit and go through every topic in a particular forum looking for an answer for something that I may want to know.

I find it extremely ANNOYING when people make their subject header something like "Please help!" or "How do I?"

I am forced to read it to see if MAYBE the issue I need information on is contained in that post.  Usually it is not! and I have wasted time looking at it! And then have to resume my search to yet again come across another post with the same generic type subject line.

I think that people that do that are extremely annoying and rude when subjects are not clear ESPECIALLY on a HELP forum such as this!

It would be extremely helpful, mannerly, and considerate to EVERYONE, if when starting a new topic, that people would be more specific in the titles as to what it is they are looking for and stop wasting everyone's time!

If you start a new topic with a title like that, that does not specify in anyway the issue you are addressing, don't be surprised or offended if the responses you get are short and curt, you brought it on yourself!

Ok, stepping down off the soap-box now, thank you for letting me vent.

We all agree with you having been in this forum for a while. However no newbies or people who read these threads actually care.

Well maybe Borg could put in some kind of a mod to not allow those types of subject lines........now there's an idea!!   Mod builders?  Let's make one for that!

It's very much like spam! You don't know what you're getting until you open it.

Or how about they are just deleted as soon as they are posted?

Maybe if I started doing what it says in the forum rules about topic subjects people would start posting better:-

Quote Use descriptive Topic Subject.  This will help others find what they want to read. Topics with bad Topic subjects maybe deleted!

That kind of a mod is not really possible. It is theoretically possible, but ASP is the wrong language to use. At a minimum you would want a custom component or ASP.NET simply because it would be processing intensive.

You could do a quick hack for it, but you would suffer from reliability issues - many posts would trigger false positives.

A really good implementation would require a low level programming language like C or even lower. Other compiled languages would suffice, but they would still soak up a lot of CPU power.

The main problems would be spell checking, thesaurus lookups, grammar checks, and the speed to do those. At some point you would need a custom word density check, but that would make the problem even worse.

In short, "Abandon all hope ye who enter here..."
