    Posted: 30 June 2003 at 8:46pm

Hello,

I am working on website http://www.toyscamp.com where I am having problem with shopping cart. I have tested with Win 2000 and IE 5.5 and 6.0 and it is working fine but some of our customer is complaining about not able to add any item to there cart. Every time they add item to there shopping cart via our website they are receiving message "Your cart is Empty". I have ask browser information and OS information to those customer who have complained but they are unable to answer even we have offered them Free shipping as a incentive.

Here is the some technical information I am using on our website:

1) We are using Plain ASP Session variable to hold the shopping cart information. I am not using any Coockies to store cart information since I have found session variable is more reliable and easier than the coockies.

Can anybody test my site and tell me if they have differnet OS and browser than the WIN2000 and IE 6.0.

Lately I have activated automated email to send me information about the broweser and OS information from my customer who is receiving this message and I have found following information about their PC:

a) Browser Type = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; AOL 8.0; Windows NT 5.1)

b) Browser Type = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.16; Mac_PowerPC)

c) Browser Type = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Q312461)

d) Browser Type = Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.2) Gecko/20021120 Netscape/7.01

e) Browser Type = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

Any help would be greatly apprecited.

It's a cookie problem. Most likely they are not allowing cookies and the site is throwing quite a few at them. Remember session variables are cookies.

a) Aol Browser 8.0

b) Macintosh Version of Internet explorer 5.16

c) Internet Explorer Version 6

d) Netscape Version 7.01

e) Internet Explorer Version 5.5

That makes no since. It should work if you tested it on Ie 5.5 and 6.0. Try testing on Netscape 7.01, On a macintosh computer, and in aol and see what happens.

Thank for all your reply.

Yes, It is cookies problem. Now...Anybody has idea on how to overcome with this issue at the same time I can use session variable to store the cart information. I have seen so many other site is fine even if my cookies was disabled.

Thanks

mamin

You could pass session information in the querystring, but that's not fool proof either.

it is usless to use sessions to hold shopping cart items.. not only that th\ey r a over head on a server but also a problem that ater certain about of inactivity period the session is cancelled.. most of the novice computer users dont know that they have to manually allow session cookies in IE6.. by default they r disabled..
