I don't want to sound ignorant - but I can't figure out how to make a forum "read only", where the little "read only" icon appears...

Locking the forum prevents even the moderators to post - which I don't want...

Where do I make a forum "read only" ?

Thanks for any info...

when you set the group/forum and admin privelages set the reply, new topic check boxes inot false/ unchecked this will disallow new topics and replies.

alternative would be to close the forum, that way its read only. of course moderators can un lock it..

first option is the one you want.

I guess I don't understand the "generic" permissions then...

What do you need them for? If you set group permissions for every group, and all members belong to a group - what do the generic permissions do???

Is there any documentation that explains the permissions in detail?

the existing permmissions system i not the best to get around,

the order they works are

generic permssions

can be overwridden by group permssions

and that can be overridden by member permissions.

so if you set the generic to read only (no posting) and a members permssion for that forum to reply

only that 1 member can reply within the forum

but if you set a group access to reply anyone within that group are able to reply

Ok,

I think I get the permissions thing now....BUT

No matter how I set the permissions, the READ ONLY icon does not appear....a user that does not have posting rights can go into the forum, click on NEW TOPIC, and receives an access message saying they not allowed to post, etc - but I want the icon to show read only for a forum....

If you look at the icons at the bottom of the forum's default page, you see a list of icons. One of them is a read only icon - with a little lock on top of the envelope...

I would GREATLY appreciate a detailed walkthru of how to make this icon appear for a forum. (For all users, except the moderator)

PS- Can a member belong to 2 or more moderator groups?

no, they cant, a member can only be in one group,

you would have to create a group where the priveleges merge, giving permssion as i in both groups.

i see what you want now. to get that, you have to close the desired forum,

logged in as an administrator, click the little button/icon next to the title of the forum, this brings up a dialouge.

click close forum, and update, when refreshed it will show the read only image.

Cool! I was a little confused when you said "close" a forum - you mean "lock" a forum...

Now I see the read only icon....I'm assuming the admin and moderator can still post in it....which is exactly what I want....

THANK YOU! Wink
