Is this something that can be done easily?  I have a table over a photo quality background image and I need a semi transparent background.

Some browsers support a "filter" for opacity, some support semi-transparent PNG's, but there is no universal way to do semi-transparent graphics in web pages.

I've gotten the most consistent results by using a very faded .gif. Photoshop and paint shop make it rather easy to get a semi-transparent effect from a gif and it's supported by all browsers.

Example at http://new2asp.com/Section_CSS/Img_O_U_Text/translucent_text_area.asp
