Which would you prefer to be/are and why? Currently applying jobs (finished college) so wondering what road would suit me best. What are the advantages & differences of both?

Which has the best prospects for the future, best for career development and best salary?

Any help would be great, thanks.

PS. Main development language is .NET.

Well all my company hires are Software Engineers and Software Developers, thus some of them bring web experience. I think with looking strictly for web jobs you limit yourself. Future projects I am sure are so integrated (web/fat) that you have to know both anyway.

Software developers can still do web apps..
can't they? So I'd go with that.

Spftware development pays more - it's more of an engineering dscipline than web development. Web development has a lower skills entry point so there's more competition on the low end.

Higher end web devlopment is more like software development in terms of being an engineering discipline. Particularly when you get into the java or advanced .net world where you start using design patterns.

Ultimately though, if you're just in it for the money, you won't find satisfaction. Find something you like doing and you'll make enough to get by.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.
