Topic: Suggestion: Improve mobile experience. Posted: 19 August 2013 at 2:16pm |
I've noticed lately that a large percentage of my users are now using Facebook groups for their communication. It's terrible really because the Facebook pages can't be organized by subject or are as easily searchable. There are so many reasons NOT to use Facebook for this type of communication, but the single biggest reason I can tell for the migration is the mobile experience. Particularly picture uploads. People like to snap photos and upload. Facebook makes that VERY easy to do. On my forum, I need to have people manipulate those photos to resize them under a particular file size, then go through an upload process and embed. Most don't know how to do it, and I cannot teach the thousands of non-technical users I have (I've tried).
Is there anything in the works to either develop a mobile app or to integrate an existing app like Tapatalk into Web Wiz forum? I need to do something. Tapatalk has an API that may help: http://tapatalk.com/api.php#

A lot of my members also keep harping on about Tapatalk, as they use it on other forums.. But every time the topic comes up, I just tell them that until Tapatalk release an ASP version for our forum software, or someone with more intelligence than myself LOL from here, can do a WWF compatible / version of Tapatalk using the API, then sadly we won't be using it.
I do agree that I also suffer from my members being more active on our FB group page, than our forums and this is something I want to change. They all find it much easier to post photos on FB, then on our forums.

Tapatalk provides an API, which should make it language-agnostic. They shouldn't need to release an ASP version since they provide an API.

RadioActiveLamb,
I don't know how the API works as I haven't looked at it, but Tapatalk would need something to talk to on your website. Since WebWiz Forums is built in ASP, you would need an ASP file on your server that Tapatalk can communicate with securely. Otherwise it has no way of working.
I would imagine that the API does not come directly from Tapatalk servers, but the API is essentially hosted on your own server. So basically the API is just a standards form of communication between the App and your website, this is the only way I could see it working.

I've had a mooch on the TapaTalk support forums from time to time and there are plenty of references of ASP based forums, using the API successfully and integrating TapaTalk.. BUT it never came across as easy etc! Which is why I was hoping one of the tech gurus here would take it on :) It's been done before by others.

+1 from me on this. And from an Admin / Mod point of view I would like to see those settings in a mobile version too.
For example if I want to delete a spammer from my mobile I need to switch to the full version.
