Most of the newbies consider that learning UI Design and a bit of front-end coding is the straightforward way to becoming a web designer.

Nope, by posting this thread I am intending to highlight that UI Design and coding are just the tip of the iceberg.

If you are new to Web Design, you should probably start with acquiring all the notions that are relevant for planning your project. Mind the proper color palettes and web-safe fonts later.

1. You need to develop your User Experience skills by reading articles/taking courses:

The Interaction Design Foundation is ideal in this regard and it’s really worth considering it as a starting point, even if you only want to read their high quality articles and books, or you actually want to take a certified course.

Other very good sources in the UX field?

http://tubikstudio.com/blog/ - Blog | Tubik Studio

http://usabilitygeek.com/ - Usability Geek - Usability & User Experience (UX) Blog

https://www.creativelive.com/ - CreativeLive: Free Live Online Classes - Learn. Be Inspired.

https://www.howdesignuniversity.com/ - How University

and so on. If you need more resources, let me know and I’ll make other recommendations.

2. After feeling more secure on your HCI/UX skills, you’ll be more familiar with the most important stages in web design, like:

Sketching

Wireframing

Prototyping

You also need to learn how to use grids in your design, and how to prepare the proper layouts. This is the much expected UI side of your job.

3. Then, the next on the list is the coding part. At first, you have to prep your design, which involves creating sprite sheets. Afterwards, you implement your design using:

HTML - for Structure

CSS - Styiling

Java Script - Behavior

4. You’re not done yet. You need to verify how well your work is rendered by different versions of web browsers. I know it sounds very complicated, but if you like the sound of Web Design, it will be a very nice journey.

Start with this Youtube tutorial. Every stage that I described kind of in a hurry is thoroughly explained.
