    Posted: 25 June 2004 at 2:42pm

I have the forum installed in IIS.5 and it opens an instance of dllhost.exe whenever the forum is accessed. The dllhost.exe file does not unload when the forum becomes inactive. It tends to increase its memory usage the longer the file stays open or as the forum becomes used more. In order to free up the memory I have to close the dllhost.exe process in Task Manager.

Is there a registry or IIS tweak I can use so that dllhost.exe closes or frees up the memory when the forum becomes inactive? I ran a second copy of the forum for test purposes and found that if you have more than one forum running on the same server, you get a dllhost.exe process opened for each forum. If you leave the processes running long enough, it can tend to use up a lot of cpu or memory resources needlessly.

2nd Question:

I think the WebWiz forum package rocks, except for the above mentioned problem. I purchased my copy this past December and just downloaded the newer version. Can I upgrade to the newer version without losing my current registration and message data? I'm thinking that as long as I leave the Access2000 database intact I should be able to upgrade without losing anything. However I'd like to make sure before proceeding. And will my original Link Removal code work on the new version?

Thanks!

2nd question.

what version are you using (you didn't say)

as you are using the access version if V6 you can download the V6 - V7 migrater. http://www.webwiz.net/web_wiz_forums/forum_download.as p

Please note that there has been some problems with downloading files. before posting about it please read the topics on this .

There is one stuck to the top of the forum

i forgot to mention that using the migrater will make it so you wont lose your current members and topics.

dllhost.exe has been known to act up like that - usually due to some coding problem involving a DB, but for other reasons as well. It would probably help if you upraded your version. I haven't seen this behavior in WWF however going back to V6.something. Do you have any mods installed?

There's also a virus version of dllhost which is fairly common. You may want to do a system scan with your AV program.

Thanks for the replies. I'm using version 7.5, so I'm assuming there won't be a migration/upgrade problem.

As for the dllhost.exe issue, I tried the forums on a Windows 2k Advanced Server machine (IIS 5), and also on a Windows 2003 Advanced Server machine with IIS 6 and dllhost opens on both. I know the Welchia virus affects this file but we've never been infected with it, as I run regular scans.

I did notice that this forum has a lot more features than my version, so I'm looking forward to the upgrade to 7.9. I've also downloaded the avatar packages. Thanks for the suggestion to look for mods.

If I still have the dllhost problem after upgrading to 7.9 I'll come back and report. I just wondered if anyone else ran into this and found a fix for it.

Thanks again!
