these days lcd monitors cost as much as flat crt monitors were in early days.. if we bought flat crt monitor that time at the arm and leg price.. then lcd monitor should sound expensive to us..

with all of us losing eye sight day by day and amount of time spent on computer consititutes the major part of daily hours.. lcd is really an eye saver else we expect to see blind programmers as MS

anyway what are some good 17inch LCD monitors from samsung, sony or BenQ??

no high gfx gaming here.. just daily use mostly..however i dont want something which will draw streaks across the screen when i scroll down....and should support medium gfx gaming too.. such as running NFSU underground

my laptop lcd runs that game well.. dont know what are the specs of my laptop lcd..

and obviously not expensive enought that i simply purchase another high performance notebook instead of goin for a lcd screen??

How does an lcd save eyesight? I would have thought that a regular monitor was better on the eyes.

regular monitor have lines of lights running in alternate pattren on a monitor screen aka scanning..crt monitor has electron beam hit a phosper layer to genrate colours and lumiance for display..this genrate differnt radiations like low strength xrays and stuff..best eample of it is that if u work six hours continus on crt monitor u will feel considerably tired compared to 6hours continus work on lcd.. bcuz of crt there was more wear and tear in ur vision cells and hence needs more repairs..since out body repairs itself when we rest or sleep

good explainations here

The problem I find with LCD monitors is that they often blur slightly as they can not refresh fast enough.

This is OK in most use, but for programming it can be a problem as when you scroll through code looking for an error it makes the text look slightly blured as you scroll.

This can course you bad eyestrain if like me you spend half your life scrolling through lines of code loooking for an error in your code.

I would suggest before you buy the monitor is to find one on display somewhere, load up a text file and try scrolling or dragging it around the screen and see if the text blurs, if it does and you do allot of programming you maybe better buying an old type CRT monitor.

no i dont do much programming tho but i have seen a lot lcd monitors which do not blur.. i think they r are the newer ones with very high refresh rates.. near real time like crt..

i went to a computer store specialized in selling laptops and lcd displays and saw no display which blurs.. even the lcd of my laptop does not have any such problem.. i think that problem with lcd is gone like a year or so ago and only exisit in cheaper not-so-popular chinese brands!! no offence to chinese!!

I use a 21" crt at 1600x1200 with a high end video card. Originally got it for flightsimming, but it's a great development tool. Can have a ton of windows showing stuff, not just sitting on the task bar.

My wife's been using a 15" lcd for a couple of years now. Does a lot of Pagemager stuff on it. Pretty good resolution at 1024x768 and a small foot print she likes a lot as her desk is usually crammed.

And of course she also likes it because it was easy to paint the frame of it to go with the room decore
