Topic: Firewire or USB 2 Posted: 04 October 2004 at 9:39am |
Hi all,
I am currently purchasing an external DVD writer for my laptop. As my laptop only has USB 1, i need to install either Firewire or USB 2. I am wondering which is faster, better, will be used more in the future etc. What ye think?
Also if USB 2 is recomended to me I am considering purchasing a "Trust 2 Port USB 2.0 Cardbus" Click the link for details.

What ye think etc??
Thanks

I've got a stack of old working laptops in the closet. Either of those technologies will outlive the functional life of your laptop.

I think usb2 is faster thus I would go with it anyhow as you have more possibilities to hook it up with other devices, there is more usb then firewire unless you do video

The answer lies on how will you use your DVD writer? As you know most USB devices don't ship with it's own power supply, that's right, it draws it from the USB port, so say you intent on burning DVDs on the move, go for USB2, watch out the battery draining thou.
Also, which Firewire do you have? 800 or 400?
Firewire 400 is as fast as 400mbps - USB2 is just faster at 480mbps, but if you have Firewire 800 that's faster at 800mbps, also note that Firewire is isosynchronus which means if you have Firewire 400 and use 2 devices plugged to it, both will work at the full 400mbps, USB2 is not like that, all devices share the same pipe therefore 2 devices will have only 240mbps to each other.
There's your data, draw your conclusions.
