    Posted: 15 November 2004 at 12:11am

I was wondering how you could narrow the search feature on the forum down to only show the relevant pages of a thread.

What I mean is say you were searching for something and it just happened to come up in a long threaded post such as the neverending post, but then say you have 200 pages. Instead of having to search through each page is it possible to only show the page or pages that contain the keyword you searched for?

Is this possible or would it be too much?

I am planning on re-writing the search page for the next version and knowing which page of a topic that the result is found in would be useful.

I haven't actually sat down and tried to workout away to calculate the page number, it may prove a little difficult.

the only way ...off the top of my head is either to bring in all posts for that thread and work out (like in the forum_posts.asp), not realistic on performace issue

or a more realistic idea..

is when you post a message a new field is stored in the threads table with Page_ID, and when the post is submitted send the page it is on an work out if its a new page or not. easy to do. the calculating same as ussual.

then when searching, bring in the pageID from the threads table and add it to the URL string.

I like the idea of a page id field. You'd have to recalculate when deleting a post though.

I wrote a procedure for working out the relevance of a link based on the search terms, not sure if it will help you or not, basically what it does is works out how many of the supplied search terms are in the item (forum post) and then the search results are ordered by the output of the sp.
