I notice that when a user is logging in there is the option to whether be included in the active users list or not. Is there a way to modify this option while the user is logged in? Or does he have to relogin to the forum?

The option means the user is liast as 'Annoymous' in the active users table.

The user would need to logout and log back in again to change this.
