Topic: multiple vote protection for polls Posted: 07 May 2006 at 7:35pm |

Borg, could you please tell me what kind of poll protection is provided in v8.x? IP based, nick based or cookie based? or can you tell me, is multi-voting impossible now?
And a question, I upgraded my v7.x database to 8.x but old polls are now multi-votable.. Is this normal?

The poll voting system has changed for version 8, although old polls should still work, but may allow voters to vote for a second time, until they are entered in the new system for that poll.
If the poll creator selects to allow multiple votes then as the name suggest users can vote multiple times.
For non-multiple vote polls, when the member votes in that poll they are now entered into the database, so that member can not vote in that poll again, under that username.
However, if you allow Guests to vote in polls, it is very difficult to track if a Guest has voted before as they are not logged into the system, so a cookie is used for Guest voters. However, I would recommend that you don't allow Guest's to vote, if you want to ensure no-body attempts to get around the system.

I use v8.01 but when a user log out and log in, he/she can vote again in non-multiple vote polls...

This should not happen unless you have setup the permissions incorrectly.
Make sure that Guests can not vote in polls and also make sure the poll is set to not be a multiple vote poll, from the start.
If this is still not working, you may have a corrupted file so try re-uploading the files again.

Slightly off-topic, but hoping for a prompt reply.
I have created a poll where multiple votes are not allowed as I want each member to be able to vote once only.
I've logged in under admin and voted, then logged out. I then logged in under another user name and going to the poll, but it says I've already voted (which is note the case).
Is this based on the IP address and not the username? If so, is this something that I can change as many users at my work will be using the same IP address and I don't want it to block their votes after the first user logs in and votes.
PS - guest permissions are turned off for polls

Just found this post from 2005 which might answer my question. http://forums.webwiz.net/poll-issues_topic13234_post73222.html?KW=multiple+vote#73222 Is it cookies rather than IP addresses that track if you have voted already?

Web Wiz Forums both sets a cookie on the users browser and records the which members have voted in a poll to prevent multiple votes by the same person.

Thanks for the reply Bruce.
So if multiple users are on the same PC, then cookies will prevent them from voting even though they have different logons?
