Topic: New MS Web Design Software Posted: 08 June 2006 at 3:29am |
Microsoft just released the community preview version of WebDesigner - whe site building part of it's new Expressions suite of web tools. The community version expires in 2007. Miles ahead of frontpage. I've only played with it a little but I think I'm going to like it better than Dreamweaver. http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/web_designer/default.mspx

What's the code like it produces? Is it as bad as other Microsoft products?

Downloading this version myself but from what I read in a blog post some time ago, they claimed it was xhtml compliant and it had built-in verifiers for some standards.

I've only played with it but it seems to do a fair job. i plan on trying to upgrade a site using it on Friday so I'll let you know. My initial impression though is good. Seems like they made a real effort to appeal to the pro crowd - especially now that dreamweavers been sold to a company that many dislike.
I've only been working in code view so haven't seen yet if the wysiwyg view mungs things up.
Out of the box, the default doc type is xml 1.0 transitional. I'll probably change that to html 4.01 strict.
Includes a css editor with intellisense built in. I currently use topstyle pro so I'll let you know how it stacks up against that.

You might want to check the support forum at the ms site. Looks like some people had some issues running it and Outlook 2003 - somehow it killed their junk mail filters but downloading an updated junk mail list from ms cleared their problem.
I didn't have any problem with Outlook 2003 so they may be referring to a previous version of the beta.
FWIW, I've got .net 1.1 and 2.0, VS 2k, 2k3, and 2k5 plus a Boreland J# VS add on, MSSQL 2k and 2k5 (MDAC 2.8), and FP2K3 on this machine. First thing I did was to check if WebDesigner broke anything. Everything seems to be working properly.
