    Posted: 16 April 2007 at 4:52pm
I'm having a problem on my forums recently.  We can no longer delete posts and the CAPTCHA security logon doesn't work anymore.  My web hoster recently moved our SQL database to a new server and this seems to be when the problems started.  Users that are able to login can post but new users can't register due to the CAPTCHA problem.

My ISP has been extremely slow in looking into the problem.  I have over 400 users and a pretty busy site and I need to fix this problem.  I am locked out of the system since I failed to login in 3 times and no matter what I try that CAPTCHA just won't let me through.  Below is the error my users receive when trying to delete a post.  Any ideas of fixing this?

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005'

Could not find server 'KUNDENMSSQLUS03' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers.

/Forum/delete_post.asp, line 185

(Using Web Wiz Forums ver. 8.01)

I do recognise the SQL server name from an email about a month ago with an issue with KUNDENMSSQLUS01 (must have been the first SQL Server they moved as lots of sites that make shopping cart software also had people complaining a month ago about this) so looks like this is the same host who after a month still hasn't got there act together.

The issues you are experiencing are not related to the Web Wiz Forums software but rather your web host has not done things correctly AGAIN.

The CAPTCHA issues sounds like your hosting server has an issue holding the ASP session and you should get your web host on this straight away.

The issue with the SQL Server KUNDENMSSQLUS03 is the same issue they had with KUNDENMSSQLUS01, the name of the SQL Server has been changed which courses configuration issues within SQL Server.

I would think your host has not migrated the SQL server correctly, instead of moving installing SQL Server on the new server and then moving across databases using backups of each database they just used an entire server backup of the old server to load onto a new server in the process have screwed up the security settings within SQL server.

The following is info on how to fix this:-

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190479.aspx

However, this fix often doesn't work and I find the best course of action is to uninstall SQL Server and reinstall it again.

To be quite frank I would have thought this host would have learnt from screwing up the migration of the previous server a month ago, and if you have no luck with them I would certainly suggest looking elsewhere for a better host.

Thank you very much :)  I have sent out yet another email to them and this time I threatened to cancel my 3 websites with them.   Hopefully they will act on this quickly cause I starting to loose users to other competing communities now.

I don't seem to be getting anywhere with these people... They claim it's fixed yet it still does'nt work.

The 'control panel' for the web site has an SQL admin.  Is there a way I can convert the SQL database to MsAccess so I can get the forum up and running or port the entire forum to some other ISP??

I ran across this thread from a Google search when I got a nearly identical error on one of our sites.  We're not using Web Wiz Forums, but the only difference in my error message is that the server name is 'KUNDENMSSQLUS05'.  I called up the hosting company and they claimed there was no problem with their server, it must be the code.  But we haven't touched the code in over a year and it used to work just fine.

A little investigation shows that your hosting company is the same one we use, 1&1.  Unfortunately it seems with their dirt-cheap prices they can't be bothered spending much time investigating these issues.  We'll definitely switch hosting if they can't get their act together.

So these are 1&1's SQL Servers, that says it all.

I would certainly recommend changing hosts ASAP, you only need to search this forum and you will see that no-one has a good thing to say about 1&1.

Looking at 1&1's prices they are not actually that cheap if you add up what you pay in a year, our own hosting at www.webwiz.net actually works out cheaper and you can even have Web Wiz Forums installed on your site by us. Plus you'll get a much better service.

1&1 is still non-responsive, I am losing members and now I'm looking into your hosting plans.  I have a few conserns and maybe you can address them.

1) How can I get the entire site moved over and installed with out to much downtime.  My registered users are still using my forum and posting messages but new user registration doesn't work and I'm blocked out of the system and can't shut down' the bbs during a host provider move.  Bascially I don't want to lose any messages.  BTW - I can handle the DNS changes and moving the website files.

2) 1&1's control panel allows me to back up the SQL database.  If I elect to use your service would you move the backed database onto your SQL server and config my forum to use it?

3) My site was built using FrontPage 2003 and I would need to continue using it.  Do you support it?

4) What's the minimum site package I would need to get my site up and running?  The database is on a Microsoft SQL 2005 64bit platform.

Feel free to contact me directly  (email address removed to stop spam harvesters)
