You can host your own server on a PC for very cheap nowadays, 3ghz, over 1gb ram, etc for little more than 1k, so why are servers with tons less specs cost so much?

Because you want:

Very fast connection speed.

Server turned on 24hours all days

Someone to administer all the server updates and hacker attacks

Back-ups

Redundancy

etc, etc...

But some are too expensive indeed. Asp ones need license for the software too...

Because the hardware is just different, depending on the server you have at least SCSI controller, evtl. RAID, then you might have dual or more CPU capability. HD's might be Hot swappable, as well as redundent Power Supplies, depends always on what's in the box...

I heard about that, the problem will allways be the heat with Semi Conductors, especially server built as 1 or 2U don't have the space for enough cooling, they are experimenting with Liquid Gel as the actual conductor which would have no heat problem, thus early in the dev stages.

I went to the product launch of Windows 2003 / VS.Net 2003 this morning and they had a Unisys server running 32 chips.

They claimed it can scale to 106 at the moment and they are testing 132!!

There have been many, many posts made throughout the world...
This was one of them.

i used to think the same untile i realized that u cannot make effieicent server from a desktop hardware.. the hardware which works perfectly on a desktop platform under w2k / xp pro may not work efficiently under w2k / w2k3 server or may be not work at all.. the hardware for servers simply has to be more tough if it is to be efficient according to server grade

as far as heat is regarded.. many servers these days r equipped with coolant based colling system..
