It looks like the SQL Server has run out of resources. With the old SQL Server 2000 it can be hard toi tell, it could be memory or it could be diskspace. You would need to check your SQL Server to see.

However, especially with a busy forum you should look at using SQL Server 2005 or 2008 instead as these databases support improved server side paging which will mean your forum will run 1,00's of times faster, use less resources and easily cope with millions of posts.

If you have to carry on using SQL Server 2000 then you would need to make changes to your forum to reduce the server load such as changing the default of 'Any Date' for topics shown in your busy forums to something much lower like one or two weeks. This can be set by editing your forum details in the admin area.

If you are using SQL Server 2005 or 2008 you do not need to do this as the server side paging means that you do not have this issue.

Would the free Express Version of SQL 2008 be better than Standard Edition 2000?

Yes using the free Express version of SQL Server 2008 would be better than using SQL Server 2000.

The Free Express Edition is more than powerful enough for running websites and forums and have even see SQL Server Express 2008 running more than 250 databases for websites, some with fairly large forums with 250,000 + posts without any problems.

To move your SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2008 Express just create a backup of your database (.bak file) and then restore the database to SQL Server 2008. It's as simple as that.
