Hi there
I have a Danish forum for primarily Danish users. Now I experience an increasing problem with foreign people who register and afterwards post spam threads and links to malware sites.

Is it somehow possible to prevent the problem by inserting a Danish question as a kind of CAPCHA when people register?

By asking a Danish question the foreign users won't have a chance to register.

Is there a smarter way to avoid these 'ardous' spammers?

You should read the page on Spam Prevention

In addition to this version 10 has a spam filter where you can add words and regular expressions to the spam filter and then set actions such as reject or require approval if posts are detected that contain the words or regular expression.

We have been using it on this forum as allot of spam tend to be on the same subjects and so by using the spam filter it tends to block 90% of the spam that was received on this board before it was implemented.

Thanx Bruce. It seems that I have to delete the spam threads manually.
  • We have tried with mail activation of new accounts. The spammers do not care!
  • Post approval will do no good!
  • Anti-spam flood control: the spammers post one subject and then they are gone! Forever!
  • Admin activation of new accounts: a possibility but it will hit all the "good" guys who have to wait for a thumbs up from an admin
  • Domain banning: Not a good idea

I am looking forward to version 10. Will paid members/customers automatically get their forum updated, when version 10 is out of beta?

Email activation does stop allot of spam, without it you would get allot more. The problem with forum spam is that people are employed to spam forums, you can find companies online offering as many as 500 forum links for as little as $50.

One good way to reduce spam is to have post approval enabled for new members accounts, once they get above 10 posts they move up to a new group where they do not have to have posts approved. Before the spam filter this was used on this forum and it worked very well.

If you have a Web Wiz Forums Hosting Packages with ourselves then upgrades would be free and just require a support ticket to have your forum upgraded.

Other upgrades would depend on the type of license you have and if your upgrade protection is still current or been renewed.

Is there a single location to go and see posts that are waiting for approval? I set my forum up for post approval, because of spam, and now I have to go to every forum/category and look for posts that need approval. This is a pain as there are 18 different forums. I look under the new posts link but they don't all show up there.

Is there a single location to see all posts that are awaiting approval?

There is go to the pre_approved_topics.asp page in your forum for a complete list of all topics that have posts that need approval.

The link to this is under the 'Moderator Tools' drop down found inside each forum on the page that lists the topics in that forum.

Until version 10 comes out I setup a Yahoo Pipes RSS feed workflow that emails me when people post the wrong words - then I just go in and delete the posts and block the IP of the spammer. I also use many of the settings Bruce mentioned.
