Something has happened to the speed on my forum, it all started somewhere in mid-life of 9.xx and its still with me on the 10.3. Often Im loosing the connection to the SQL server 5 out of 10 times, and the rest 5 times results in "This page was generated in 24,719 seconds" or worse.

My Web-host have tried to restart the MSQL server i few times without any positive result. Im pasting a few of the error msg I received and hope for a miracle Cry

The problem is with your providers servers. Either their servers are overloaded or the network between database and web server has to higher latency.

If your web host can not fix the performance issue then it's time to switch to a new host.

If you have a look at the page below at the 'Live Production Forums' section there are some links to some of our customers Web Wiz Forums that are running on our own shared hosting that have over three quarters of a million posts, so that you can get an idea of how fast larger forums should be running using SQL Server:-

Bruce I appreciate your answer too, but I have to say that I am facing similar problems.

The first provider kicked me out claiming that my forum's traffic is not permitted on shared hosting.
The second provider did the same thing and forced me to upgrade to a business package.

Today I am facing similar difficulties and I am not sure who is to blame.

When they fix the problem, the forum is extremely responsive. But the performance deteriorates after a few days and weeks to the point described by the first poster (query timeouts and other errors).

For me this indicates a problem with the hosting company, but this is the second one in less than 12 months and a business package too. I wonder if there is a memory leack or a problem with connections left open somewhere.

I am considering my options, but wish to ask you:
  • have you done any stress tests that you can announce in the forum (or by PM)
  • have you seen the need for any performance upgrades in future versions
As you can understand with 300 active users the performance of the forum is a real concern for me.

Performance of Web Wiz Forums is not the issue as the forum is already had allot of work done on performance with server side paging, all database connections closed, and all objects released.

The cost of running servers is very high, while the cost charged to customers for shared hosting is very low, so shared hosts have to pack as many websites on a server as they can. Typically most  shared hosts will have over 1,000 websites per server.

300 active users in Web Wiz Forums  translates to around 300 concurrent connections to your website.

Whether it be just a basic website or a forum, 300 concurrent connections is allot for shared hosting. At these levels you would be reaching the limits of resources available for shared web hosting and so you would be getting performance issues.

With our own shared hosting we typically place under 500 websites per server. Even with our low populated shared hosting at 300 concurrent connections to your website we would be asking you to either look at your own server or we setup one of our custom semi dedcated shared hosting package on a server with 10 or less websites to give your website enough resources to run.

At the type of levels that you are talking about with 300 active forums users you have reached the limits of shared hosting and unfortunately would need to dig deep and pay out for a semi dedicated hosting package or your own server.

If you would like us to put together a quote for hosting your busy website then contact our sales department with some statistics and resources levels and will look at putting together a quote for either a custom semi dedicated package or your own server.

I will keep this in mind Bruce. I am definately looking into VPS hosting rather than dedicated servers, because the cost is significantly lower.

Your post was very enlightening as I always wanted to know the 'limits' for shared hosting and decide that if I want my site to continue I will have to look into more expensive solution.

Very greatful for that and I will probably contact the sales department to get a quote.

By the way, I just wanted to add that 300 active users does not mean 300 connections to the database, since it is 300 active users the last 20 minutes!

Personally I reduced it to 15 minutes and now it shows about 200-220 users online.
