Hi folks,

We're currently using the free 8.05a version of Web Wiz.

Two questions:

1. How can I tell whether we're using Access or SQL as a database? I have a feeling it's the latter, but inherited this setup without any documentation.

2. Can I upgrade from 8.05a to the current v10 without any issues, and are there any substantial negatives about making this upgrade? e.g. feature removal.

(Also, is it really as simple as following the Access/SQL guides?)

TIA

Version 8 is very old and I cant really remember it very well but I'll give it a go.

To find out what database you are using, look in the "database/database_settings.asp" file and it should tell you at the top, it would be the one not commented out with an '

If the "database" folder does not exist, then I can't remember where it would be. Try "common.asp" and "includes/setup_options.asp".

I would suggest that the positives would far outweigh the negatives on upgrading, there are a few features missing (redundant) I think it would be a complete redesign from V8.

It should update the database fine using the setup wizard after uploading the files, but I would highly recommend you make a backup of your database (as well as your files) before attempting to upgrade, just in case.

Thanks for replying.

strDatabaseType = "SQLServer" is not commented out, so I'm guessing SQL Server.

Now it's just a case of following this guide?  http://www.webwiz.net/web-wiz-forums/kb/sql--upgrade.htm - http://www.webwiz.net/web-wiz-forums/kb/sql-server-upgrade.htm

The only problem is I don't know if we have any direct access to the server, therefore whether it's possible to backup the database. Does this have to be done with with Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio?

Our biggest problem currently is with spam, so is v10 better at preventing this?

You should contact your hosting provider to get your SQL Server Databases Connection details and also ask them to make a backup of your database. Most providers give you online tools to create backups and restores of SQL Server Databases.

Version 10 does have many new anti-spam features with blocks for remote form submission, spam filter, and checking with stopforumspam.com to block known spammers from signing up. You can also disable signatures and links for the new user group. Using these most forums see spam drop by over 97% within weeks as spammers move to easier targets.

Thanks both. I got it to work. I had to modify the folder permissions on forum\database using PLESK for the site (the site's host were very helpful). All done though :-)
