Attempting to post a huge amount of information generates error.  (such as copying and pasting msn.com source a couple dozen times).  Also tends to bog server down if server isn't all that fast.

The ASP response object can only handle 100kb or so of data. If you try to post more data than this the response object can't handle it and dies.

This is a limitation with ASP itself.

Couldn't you use javascript to stick so much characters worth of information into a hidden field when submit is clicked and then use that for processing, or at least notify the user and stop the post?

The entire response object can only handle 100Kb so splitting across multiple fields wouldn't work.

Also there is no way before calling the response object to findout how much data is in the response object.

The response object also contains other data such as browsers details, HTTP headers, cookies, form input, etc. so there is no way of knowing about other outside forum influences, like other applications on your site setting large amount of data in cookies, so it is very difficult to predict.
