Follow the upgrade instructions it tells you how to do this.
You are simply upgrading the files and images, not the database so you keep the same database which contains all your members, posts, topics, PM's etc. so you do not loose anything.

When you run an update or upgrade you are not actually altering the existing database (which stores ALL the posts and messages. So even when you run the upgrade any existing posts, messages will still be there
If you want to DELETE those old messages or posts, then you would either delete them manually one by one, or use Batch Delete in your administration control panel
