    Posted: 08 June 2006 at 11:38am
Hi all

I have had to re-install my SQL server (7) - I used the opportunity to upgrade to SQL 20000.  I am now having problems connecting to the DB.  This is a remote server and I connect via the internet (remote desktop for admin)

Previously I used the IP address eg 192.41.6.200  (Named COSMOS) for the SQL server with no issues.  Now I have Two instances of SQL Server running on the same Machine.  one is the default named 'COSMOS'  and the other is 'COSMOS\MAC'

I had no problems before using the ip address but now I cannot connect using variations of the above.

Can anyone help me?

Lynne

If you are upgrading from version 7 you should bypass 2000 as that is also dated now and go for SQL Server 2005

You need to make sure you are running the SQL server in mixed mode and allowing TCP/IP connections.

Also, include the instance name when connecting to your database..

I have no choice at present but to move to SQL 2000 - this is a done deal.  I have two instance of SQL 2000 server running.  The default SQL server on <ServerName> was previously accessed as follows:

Driver={SQL Server};Server=<ip Address>;UID=<SQLUser>;PWD=<SQLPassword>;Database=<DatabaseName>;

one instance of SQL reverts to the default server name <ServerName> and the other <ServerName>/SecondInstance.

The SQL server settings are Mixed mode but when I try and use sa password I get 'not a trusted SQL connection' errors.

Please assist with connection string I should use in both instances.  Or must I change settings on server and then add users to NT  authorities?

Many thanks

I'm not an expert on SQL Server permissions, but this sounds to me like a permissions error connecting to the database.

It's been a while since I got an error like you mention, but I think the last time I did was because the SQL server was not set to allow remote sa connections.

Try having a look on some SQL Server web sites for more help as they can probaly give you better advice when connecting to a SQL server and the correct permissions.
