Hi Bruce...

Just a few questions...

  1. How is the new WYSIWYG (RTE) coming along for the forum? Is there a rough ETA?  As even I am getting this random pop up on a computer Confused... And its kind of annoying alot of members Confused

  2. This other way of keeping people logged in?  By using the DB to store the data or something...  You said it will effect performance if people switch to it?...  Can you be a little bit more specific.. Will it be dramatic, or only add a little extra strain?

  3. I occasionally keep getting errors such as the one below when I try (for example) to update my profile?  I am logged in and on a machine that I have been posting all morning on? Confused

Is it anything to do with the login thing?....

Only posting this up, as from my personal experience on a very large active forum - These are the only real bugs that are letting the software down.... Embarrassed...  Again ... Not having a moan (Well .. LOL).. Just asking some questions that I think everyone is thinking Smile

1. I believe I have found a solution to the RTE problem which will be in the next version, but I seem to have lost all the changes I made, as I am presently having to work on multiple machines in multiple locations while I sort out a new office, which I hope to have complete next week, as soon as NTL get their arse in gear and put in a broadband connection.

2. If you use the database to store the users session instead of the web servers memory, it will be slower as reading and writing to memory is very fast. Reading and writing to the database is slower, which means you will have at least 1 extra database hit per page, and at allot more writing to the database. The delay will be only a few more milli-seconds, but if you want maximum speed then the web servers memory will be much faster.

3. This problem can sometimes happens if the server periodically drops the servers session, but I have changed the tracking process to hopefully resolve this issue.

I'm hoping I will have it ready very soon, but I am moving into a new office next week, which means that things are a bit up in the air at the moment in regards to having a decent development environment to finish off the next version.

I did that last week and though it can be a hassle and expensive, the right development environment is priceless.

I rented an apartment near a gym in a blue collar area. Everyone goes off to work during the day and it's nice and peaceful. I've got two bedrooms and a large living area plus the kitchen and full bath. The cost was literally 20% of what a similar "office" would have cost in a more traditional arrangement.

No more interruptions!!! I even subscribed to a phone system that accepts messages if I take the phone off the hook.

This to me is the perfect "decent development environment."

Take care Bruce and I hope your move goes smoothly.

David

Anything has to be better than what I have at the moment, which is a small office on an industrial estate, with no working lights, 1 working plug, and the blinds for the windows won't open, so I can't even look out of the window.

The 1 electric plug use to get quite hot in winter, with PC, printers, monitors, phones, etc. and an electric heater plugged into it. It was still so could through I couldn't take my coat off.

80% of Web Wiz Forums version 8 was coded on a small notebook with a 10inch screen with no Internet connection, from a small apartment I share with my Girlfriend and 6 year old kid, as it was warmer there than in my office this winter.

After that the new office will be like haven, so I am really looking forward to it.
