Me too! Is the alpha really that unstable? Can't it suffice as a 8.0 release candidate? It seems to running like water.

Not really as it is in complete and doesn't have all the features that version 8 will have.
Releasing an Alpha version will be buggy, have difficulty installing,
and wouldn't be upgradable to the full version, not to mention all the
problems of supporting incomplete versions on top.
It would just hold back development of the final version even more as I
already spend 99% of my time dealing with other things on the site,
like support, which leaves me very little time to do any coding these
days.
When I first started the site I could spend about 30 minutes a day on
answering support questions, emails, etc. then spend 8 hours a day writing
code, so new versions where released almost every other week.
Now I spend around 6 to 8 hours Monday to Friday answering emails etc.
and about 4 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday, when it goes quite, this
then leaves only around 30 minutes to an 1 hour a day to write any code.
This is why development of new versions is much slower than it use to be.

Would it be worthwhile to bring in some educated community members to assist as a "tech support staff" if this isn't already in place?

-boRg-,
I know not many people will like me for saying this, but I think it has come time that you begin charging for this forum or for support.
In order for you to continue to release upstanding and excellent software you need to have time to do it.
You made a perfect point above when you said that you spend a majority of your time supporting these products instead of developing.
But either way you do not make enough money that you need to work at the warehouse to make some extra money.
I vote that you begin charging for the scripts or for more than knowledgebase, FAQ support.

I think it would be a good idea for some sort of Tech Staff to answer
support questions, I mean most of the questions would be relatively
easy to maybe a medium difficulty, and even then most of the older
members of this community can answer them because they have either seen
the question answered before or have experienced the problem first hand
and found out how to deal with it. If you do decided to setup
some kind of Tech Support Staff, I'd be more than happy to donate my
knowledge of the script.
And as for the 8.0 release... Are you gonna die if you dont get an
upgrade or something? 7.9 is working fine for now...
