Topic: Whatever happened to the WebWiz WHOIS script? Posted: 03 April 2007 at 1:29pm |
|
Greetings all,
I find myself needing a good, ASP-based WHOIS script, and there's not much out there. I found a few DLLs that don't work very well under Windows Server 2003 and I keep coming across references to the WebWiz WHOIS component. Alas, it seems not to exist any longer, even though reference is made to it on the purching form. Does anyone know if I can still purchase it and if it works ok?
Thanks.

The whois application simply used the HTTP XML object that is used in AJAX to connect to another site and pinch the whois data from those sites.
The problem is it eventually didn't work as the whois sites blocked access from people leaching off of them, and so was dropped.

Now that's funny because that's what I was doing

Yeah, I was worried about that too. Luckily I found a freeware winsock wrapper for ASP that lets me query whois servers directly.

Thanks, Its my first script using ASP and Ajax.
I wouldnt wory too much about the whois servers. As long as you connect to them the right way . i.e via port 40 something then you shouldnt be banned.
Still got a lot more to do on it . Theres a few bugs

The main whois servers (eg rs.internic.net for .com, .net) are there to be queried, it's just that you can't use the HTTPXML object to query them (they're on port 43). I think that's why most people use the HTTPXML to pull the data from another whois website as it's much easier. It's naughty though and I'm finding more and more web-based whois sites implementing captcha to stop it.

Thanks That was what i was trying to say.. The script i developed querys on port 43 its faster and works with allwhois servers . in other words you can query any domain TLD as long as you know which are the athoritve whois servers. They are widely available if searched on google.
