Can a better way be done to handle PNG issues in IE 5.5 and 6.0?

A lot of users are still using IE 6.0... even large companies like the one I work for. A lot of companies have decided not to upgrade to IE 7 because they think it's a bad browser or was a Vista-intended browser, and slows down the computer.

At work, When I try to view the forum I would have to wait a lot for png images to load on the page everytime I vist any page, where as in version 8 everything was super fast!

Is there any suggestion on how to improve this? maybe replace all png images with gif images?

Why annyone would think IE 6 is better than IE 7 is beyond me, has to be the worst browser in common use at this present time.

Tried using gif's for IE 5.5 and 6 and the whole forum just look absolutely cack.

Recent statistics from a large range of sites that we host have sown a large drop in the use of IE 6 over the last 6 weeks as it looks like allot of people are finally moving over to IE 7.

The uptake of Vista also seems to be slowly creeping up, which could be done to the performance update MS released, as Vista is now starting to run sweet as a nut, but will more likely need SP1 before large corps considering moving over.

I personally prefer to use IE7 over IE6. At home I have IE7 and Firefox... and have no issues loading pages... but at work... I even get embarassed to show my forum to my co workers... because with V9 it loads so very slow for  them that they would just leave, i'm afraid.
I also wanted to setup a forum for my team, and was about to post a question regarding licencing when used in an intranet.
