With the way google shares info with advertisers, using Chrom is like giving your PC to Doubleclick.

That's my thought too. I do my best to keep Google off my computer. It's not easy to say the least. It seems the search bar, Google updater and other apps are automatically installed sometimes.

Google Chrome does use the AppleWebKit engine which is the same engine as used for Safari.
If you watch the Google PR video on why they created the browser you will notice they do not mention anything about the rendering engine, instead they just talk about the interface and how they have made it as plain as possible to match Google's homepgae.
The reason being is that Google Chrome is Safari 3.1 but with a new skin.
A bit like Netscape 8 and 9 were Mozilla Firefox with a different skin.
There is not really many rendering engines out there. There is Internet Explorer, Mozilla Gecko, and AppleWebKit. Nearly all browsers you get use one or more of these rendering engines, just have a different skin.

Sorry to necro the thread but I wasn't able to get back to it until today. Couple of responses to comments: 1. I would rather use the newest microsoft browser as it's more standards compliant than Chrome/Safari. That being said... I use Firefox anyway for the control its plugins/addons give me and it's even better conformance to standards. 2. There's open source, and then there's not so open source. - Chrome is not entirely open. Safari is a closed source engine that google licences with access to the code. Maybe they licensed the code they changed for redistribution, but I doubt it.
- But more importantly, Google goes to it's own site to populate the drop-down list of "sites you might be interested in based upon previous browsing preferences". They don't share their internal algorithims with the OS community. Given Googles history, it would be foolish not to expect the top sites on the list to be advertisers.
- Does anyone know why Chrome tries to call-home when it's not being used? Can't find any explanation of that behavior through a google search.

I must agree with the general feelings here. Too minimalist. I love the search box on firefox - ability to pick up the search engine easily -, some add-ons, bookmarking etc. Also privacy issues are real concern.
Chrome is supposed to have better javascript engine, more stable etc. which is not of primary concern to most users. Most people doesnt mind if the javascript takes a fraction of secnd more to execute.
