Also if you change the system date on your computer and reopen or recompile one of the files, the new date would appear as  Last modified.

its possible to edit the last edited date on the files then burn them to cd.. or set the computer date to 2000 and burn.. so i dont think that would be better than just store the files on hd..

In the US, the poor man's copyright (i.e. mail it to yourself) does not hold up in court (even registered mail). If something is important enough to you to copyright beyond just adding the copyright info to it, then you should file the correct copyright forms and pay the fee. You can file yourself with no cost above the registration fee.

It seems that it would defeat the point of charging for copyright registration if it could be easily circumvented. Mail even registered mail is easily opened and resealed by simple steaming, it's not a fool proof method of establishing a date of creation.
