Gadgets use RSS feeds. For example, if you click on one of the headlines, you get taken to a site that offers an rss feed - usually on their home page - e.g.
http://www.cnn.com/services/rss/ or
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/services/rss/Feeds usually require some formatting to fit nicely within a site - either css or xslt. Once you have a library of feed retrieval and formatting, it's just a matter of setting a user preference cookie to determine which one is displayed.
