PHP is different to ASP, so database backup can be done in things like PhpBB but I don't think it is possible to do such a feature in ASP, the only way I could see to do it is to have a second database and a secound connection to the backup database. Then again it would be just as simple for the person to download the database and make a backup on thir own machine. Databases don't very often go wrong on th server, when you need a backup is when the server dies and you loase everything, in which case a backup on the server would be a waste of time as you would also loose your backup. |
You could use a file system object to just copy the database to a different location.
But then again the chances of you loosing the first one will probably take out the back up to like you said

Ok I see what you mean about the polls, however I disagree on the avatar upload function. I think it would be a nice option, which of course you can disable if you are concerned about bandwidth. I mean V7 allready implements file and image upload so this isnt much of stretch by any means. People can allready do it but its not as convenient right now. Besides how much bandwidth does a 64 x 64 or 100 x 100 pixel image take up anyway, I'd hazard to say not much. |
Believe it or not it can take up a lot of space. Take for instance boRg’s Avatar If you have 4000 hits to it would take up 16Mb and that’s just for 1 Avatar. That’s not counting other members and that’s also I nicely done avatar at only 4kb you may have users creating avatars that are 16 to 24kb because of poor Photoshop skills.
4000 hits X 16kb = 64Mb
4000 hits X 24kb = 96Mb
So when you do something like allow people to upload there own images you need to remember bandwidth. And also keep in mind that these same users could be hot linking that same avatar to the 13 other Forums that he is a member of. Then he’s wasting your bandwidth and you’re not even getting his contribution.

Name banning can be a part of a "Account Filter" where you can have wildcards so if you dont want any accounts made with the word blah in it you would add to *blah* to a list and it would disallow people having blah in any part of their account. Can also add accounts you want to ban. Two features in one!

I hate it when people do that.
Don’t just edit your post. It’s annoying to have to try to finger out what people are talking about because someone puts a new idea in a post that they had already made.

Scotty, I have the same on my work PC. I think it has to do with addons you had at one time for your IE. I seem to have that since someone put a Google Bar on here but don't get rid of it, you need to wait for the whole page to load before scrolling.

I don't know why this is happening, I re-installed IE6 but no change. Though it does not happen on my forum, the only one I encountered that is yours and str8dogs. It seems to have a waitstate when loading the page half way (the progress bar) At home it works with no probs so I am guessing it has to do with the computer here.... (Maybe Win2000 and IE6 in combination with Google or so)

Well I guess if you roll it out on a major webpage that could be a concern but for a small private board like I run, I think it's a nice option. As I said before Borg allready implemented file and image upload in V7, which I am sure if made available to users, allready uses up a lot more bandwidth than the smaller avatars ever would. I think flexibility and scalibility are very important things for software of this type to have. You shouldn't choose your feature set based solely on a high traffic scenario IMHO.
