Topic: Firefox spellchecker Posted: 11 July 2004 at 11:16am |
Hello ~borg~! Continuing to enjoy your most excellent WWG.
There is a spellchecker for Firefox 0.9 called Spellbound
(author adapted it from the Mozilla browser spellchecker) that seems to
work only on non-WYSIWYG editors. I've really only tested it on
the MozillaZine forums (where it works) and on WWG (where it doesn't
... except in the Subject text box). I see that the author is
"working on an HTML WYSIWYG editor for web forms that will use
SpellBound" and I was wondering if you might consider implementing this
ability for WWG?
In this regard there is also another Firefox extension that has the same drawback: Scribe. It " adds Word Processor like functionality to web forms, including opening and saving form entries as files." The opening and saving of form entries is the part that really interests me. I'm guessing that the fix for the spellchecker might also do the same for Scribe?

With Firefox being revised so often, I think it'd probably be wise to
wait for an official release before adding features to a release of the
forum. I've been using Firefox almost exlusively and I do miss
the spell checker feature. Pretty small complaint compared to
everything else that's so much better.

Well, I figured I'd have to wait one way or another ... after all, I'm always waiting on something!
Yeah, Firefox is a pretty cool browser. I've been playing around
with it, adding extensions. Basic geek stuff, you know! 1.0
will be worth the wait. Of course, then there'll be 1.1, 1.2,
1.3, etc, etc, etc!!
Yep, always waiting! :)

Hi,
Just want say I have been using the Spellbound extension for
awhile now and have found it to work in almost everything.
Yes this forum and it textbox are one place it does not seem to work
other then that I have no problem with. In fact just a short while ago
I up date the extension.
As far as Firefox goes I have run into very few site that it did not
work on for these few exception I have another extension which will
open IE for me from Firefox.
So people complain that its not like IE of course it not like IE,
it
is another program just like anything other program. Each
program
runs the way its developers think it should run. Would you expect
any two programs written by different companies to run the same?
Anyway if have not given Spellbound or FF a try give it a try but remember do not expect it to be IE.

Just to let y'all know. I had written to Robert (the guy who made the Spellbound extension) asking him about this and he said he would look into it. I just got this note from him:
I just thought I would give you an update...I figured out a way to get spellbound to work with wysiwyg editors... Should work with most if not all of them when they are embedded on a page. Hopefully it will be available within the week.
Cheers, Robert

I'll have to keep an eye on spellbound to see about putting a link in
or something of that nature from this WYSIWYG Editor so that Firefox
users can have a spell checker.
I know it is something I would like to use.
