Hi,

current web server is win2k using CDONTS.  works fine, no problems.

question: i have a seperate mail server, which i would prefer to relay off of.   If i do this, will it improve forum performance.  If it will, which component would be best to use in the intrest of speed and a large volume of mail.  right now my forum sends hundreds of emails a day..

thank you!

Using the localhost SMTP server always works faster no matter what email component you use.

By using an SMTP server that is not a localhost delays can be possiable in connecting to the SMTP server.

The delays depend on speed of your netwerk, network load, physical location of your SMTP server, how many networks are between your SMTP server and your web server, etc.

With a localhost SMTP server you get none of these issues as the SMTP server is located on the same server as your web server.

Sorry i don't think i explained myself correctly.  the mail server is (literally) right next to the forum server.  same subnet.  i'm trying to offload cpu cycles on the webserver, and was hoping it would help if i offloaded the smtp traffic to another server so the forum doesn't have to use the built-in smtp. since i've changed it delivery speed is the same on messages as the mail server is only configured to server a couple of my private domains (including the forum's support account)
