Hi all,

I am in the process of putting downloadable video clips on my website and am wondering the best format to use. When I say best I mean a tradeoff between quality and size.

Options the I know of are .mpeg, .avi, .wmv

Anyone have any advice.

It really depends on the nature of the content as well as the codec you choose for them. DivX is popular and there's a free version. WMV isn't good on Mac boxes. AVI is a solid format and the best choice of the above for any general purpose. MOV is what the pros use but not very Windows friendly. If you're doing screen captures, then AVI with TSCC is the best choice in all likelyhood.

It also depends on your audience...

Too many choices. AVI is a standard (whether Apple likes it or not). Just make sure to choose the right encoder. The WMV encoder can be downloaded for free... etc. etc. etc.

The nature of the video clips are sports clips. While I would like quality as best as possible, I am also worried about the size of the clip (download time). Being honest I am fairly confused about which format to use, they all have fors and againsts! When I decided on the format I will need to find an application that works well with the format, allows me to edit the clip etc, hopefully free.

Try surfing some porn sites with free video clips and see what they use. Download a few and look into what codecs they are using as well. The reason I suggest porn is because there's a lot of money in it and they guys that do it really do their homework. Also check out CNN to see what they are using.

Real (RM) is another alternative.

You can always do some server-side client detection to choose different formats as well. I've written a couple tutorials on headers that you can check out. The one on HTTP headers give some basic code and the on on the HTTP_USER_AGENT tells a bit about to do it.
