Topic: Getting a Web Wiz host, help appreciated Posted: 02 November 2005 at 6:03pm |

Eh, I hope I posted this in the right forum. Okay.
I'm going to purchase a host for running Web Wiz, and I'm not sure what to go for.
I've found a host with Windows server, MS Acces database and ASP support. I can run the normal version of Web Wiz on this, can't I? Then I saw this: "Please note: - MS Access databases have a number of limitations including only 20 concurrent connections per server and limits on size, if you can, use the MS SQL Server version below."
What does these limitations mean? Will it affect a pretty small forum with maybe 150 members? Is it not good? And I don't exactly know yet what kind of MS Acces database it is, could it be wrong if it's not 2000?
So what is suggested to buy to run Web Wiz? Is a host with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 expensive? Links?
Need a host and info on what the host needs for Web Wiz. Thanks in advance.

MS Access is a desktop application really not web based as its a flat file.
also 20 connections, when you say 150
is that on at once, also is there likly to have many posts etc because i would then advise to go to SQL.
you can get SQL hosting relativly cheap these days.
one i would say avoid is 1&1 and fasthosts

Hmm. I just noticed Web Wiz now has Google ads. It wasn't like this before. Isn't it possible to download an older version and don't have them, or are they just there now? Ads on a forum you host yourself sucks. No other boards I can think of have that.
So MS Acces is not suggested, then. I'll go for a SQL.

borg has said its a tempory thing to see how it goes.
it is advisable to use the latest version because of security holes and features that have been added.
they where added in the latest (V7.95)
<edit>
security holes have been patched not added
</edit>

Until now, I've used PunBB in a Unix host. Will Web Wiz run as fast as it, if I have the SQL version? Is Web Wiz latest version fast? I'm switching from Unix and PHP with purpos to use Web Wiz, is it worth it if I use SQL? As I understood it, there are no limitations in a host with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 database? What's best between 7.0 and 2000? Is it easy to skin Web Wiz with a css stylesheet? Thanks.

hi,
i have not used or seen punBB
i have seen upsized Access databases that have over 100,000 posts and topics and they have run fine,.
upsized = changed to MS SQL , they run as good as they can and are quite fast
www.trustedtradesmen.com/forum is one i have done and has 51,000 posts
feel free to check the generation times.
im not to sure on the difference between Microsoft SQL server 2000 and 7
i think it maybe just bug fixes or are the same thing just called which you wish to call it.
you can change the colours,images and style sheet very easy usig
- change the images in the image folder
- edit the skin_file.asp
- edit the style sheet
the onlything you can't do is edit them from within the Forum application you have to edit them off site and upload them.

Can moderators do silent edits in Web Wiz? Where can I try a demo of Web Wiz with the admin panel and everything? Tried the Lite Version with free hosts, but couldn't make it work with the database and all that.

moderators can't do silence edits but i have added this feature to one of my forums.
you should be able ot get it running it maybe the path to the database and required to move the database to get it working.
thius is the only way to check it out.
