I've heard of ones being over 100Mb in size.

But the size that it can get up to and your forum still performs and runs OK depends on your server. If you are on your own high spec server with no other sites then 100Mb won't be a problem. But if you are on a shared web server then 10 to 15Mb would be a more reasonable maximum size.

My forum has 7200 postings and about 10,5 Mb in webspace.
501 members and concurrent maximum was 42 visitors and no problem (performance) at all.

I am using a shared web server.

Not quite as good as the stats above but still not bad,
ive got nearly 5000 posts, 319 members, and most online was 33 acording to online stats, and 57 acording to matrix live stats.
And yeah still works sweet as a nut, DB is currently 5.6

Our Access stats before going to SQL version (which is the best thing we ever done) were:

80,000+ posts
650 ish members
10-30 online 24/7
105 most online.

Any problems we had with slowness of the forum was usually evident at 6pm UK time when the dial-up users came on, other than that it worked like a charm!

If you have the chance to use SQL version I highly recommend it, beats Access hands down every time.
