Well that's a broad assumption. Not everyone would be willing to pay up front for a 1 year agreement to host it with an outsourced hosting company without knowing if they will get a lot of hits. Most would usually do this after the volume of hits justify it.
Besides, broadband speeds are now fast enough to allow hosting at home at least for the short term.
There doesn't always need to be a demand before a product is made. Sometimes the product becomes so popular, it creates a demand. That's how Apache got so popular in the consumer as well as commercial sectors, because linux was free, and it apache available with all Linux distributions.
It wouldn't hurt to test the waters for proof of concept and drawing conclusions from that.
