    Posted: 10 October 2006 at 5:27pm
When I view a thread, at the bottom there is a quick reply box that contains a button that has the text "Post Reply". Below that is a graphic that says "post reply".

The two objects both say the same thing, but do different things. I've heard several complaints from my users about this issue.

Here's the deal. When my users type a post in they sometimes hit the post reply icon instead of the button. Instead of posting the text they entered in the quick reply box, a new window appears that allows them to enter their reply. The reply box is empty. If the user clicks on the back button (using FF at least), the quick reply textarea is empty because of anti-cacheing measures. In effect they lose everything that they typed. Very frustrating for them and myself.

What can be done about this issue?

You could edit the graphic button to say 'Full Reply Form' or something like that.

Original images can be downloaded from the download page.

Or you could change it so the issue is resolved.

Here is one idea: Have both the icon and the button be submit buttons. If the passed textarea is not empty then presume that it was meant to be submitted. Otherwise display the full form.

Another idea. Us onClick for the icon. If text is contained in the reply textarea then use a JS confirm to warn of the impending loss of information.

Or just delete the post reply button.

Or dump the quick reply box. I guess that's a possible short-term setting I could change.

It will more than likely be changed.

We have just purchased 3 licenses from several icon companies to include their icons in version 9.

This means that we are going to be able to supply a minimum of 3 professional skins with the default install all with great new icons.

However, how it will look will be decided nearer the time, but a this is a problem it will be kept in mind when designing the new look.

Mikey:

Just saw this. Thanks for the graphic work, but I'm not sure users would immediately understand the difference between Reply and Full Reply.

Hopefully 9.0 will fix this issue.

Lol i knocked that up ages ago.
I know what you mean for some of my users it would have to read

"Click this button to go to the full reply, this is a bigger version of that little box to the left and has more pretty little buttons above it, however you will lose what ever you've writen in that little box to the left"

Somehow i doubt that'll fit on that little button
Handyman man?
