I think the forum works great, but I have one complain, and that is that it's to many updates to often. I install one version, and just when I'm about to air it, then a new version hits the sky.

You can check the release notes and update only the files involved in the latest update.

Updates are done for the convenience of the customer. It's not hard for WebWiz to do a monthly schedule like the first Tuesday of every month (microsoft's way) and issue updates by then ...but people will not like it that way. Besides, it's very difficult to know what you have missed before releasing your software... so when you release it is only when you will know what has been missed as people will help you find it.

I'm sure Borg releases versions when he believes there is sufficient reason and I can see two good ones in this version (images and API). Implementation of new releases is totally optional and minor versions can be skipped easily.

I was lucky that it only took me 5 minutes to:
  • download and unpack the files
  • copy the files to new forum folder (\forum905) in my site
  • copy across the database connection file
  • copy across the CSS formatting files
  • copy across the header and footer files
  • copy across \uploads and set permissions
  • edit a file to switch off birthdays (the only software modification which would be better off in the database)
  • test it runs OK (quick test as easy to revert to previous version)
  • rename the new forum folder to go live
I have no code modifications and I avoid mods like the plague and stick to standard package software whenever possible otherwise those mods have to be redone or at least checked every new release. That high maintenance cost needs some serious justification.

We have some choices.

I'm still running the original final version of 9 on my live site. i have no problems at all. none of the issues that others have brought up that have prompted an update have affected me in any way, so there has been no reason for me to upgrade yet. i'd say just upgrade when you have to... atleast upgrade for security updates, the rest just skip if they don't affect you.

The problem with version 9 is not allot of people beta tested it, so many bugs that effect only certain server setups did not come to light.

Also version 9 made a big change to the user interface, as a result allot of people gave feedback on this, but again mainly after version 9 was released and not while in beta testing.

This last release is fairly stable and most people now seem happy with it, so unless a critical bug comes to light the next release will more likely be some time off.

There have also been some new features added to version 9 since it was released, such as improvements in the Member API, uneder version 8 this was not very widly used, but seems with version 9 this is very popular, so improvements have been made to this feature.

The other main feature that has been added is the 'last unread post' icon which takes the user to the last unread post in a forum or topic. This was added after user feedback, as it had not been suggested before and was relatively easy to implement and is a great feature, that I use myself all the time now.
