Going to New Posts when logging on, then clicking on the yellow arrow head used to always go to the last post in a topic. For some reason this is not now happening for me, it goes to some random (seemingly) post midway down, for instance if the topic is 6 pages, it goes to a post on page 3, even when I have posted in that topic later on. If I scroll down the front page and click on the same pointer in the latest topics, it usually does go to the last post. This is a new computer running Windows 8.1 with IE11. Is there some setting I've missed somewhere? Just that it's a bit annoying.

The yellow arrow is taking you to the last 'unread' post in that topic.
If there are unread posts in the topic the arrow is shown in yellow and takes you to the last 'unread' post in that topic.
If the arrow is grey you have read all posts in that topic and it takes you to the last post in the topic.

No, it's taking me to posts much earlier. I had already contributed to the topic, but next time it takes me to a page perhaps before that post. Sometimes it takes me to the first page out of 7, when I have looked at that topic many times before. I get logged in automatically so I don't think it's a cookie problem.

This feature has been tested many times over the years since uit was introduced and no issues have been found with the way it work.
It is likely that you did not look at the page in that topic that has the unread post so that post is still marked as unread even if you went to the last page in the topic. Once you visit the page in the topic that has the unread post it is then marked as read.
When you go in to the topic posts that are unread are marked with a yellow star on them next to the post date, once you have viewed it the yellow star turns in to a blue dot.
When you click the yellow arrow it will take you to the last unread post in that forum or topic which will be marked with the yellow star next to the post date to show that post is unread.

I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong with the software, up to now it has always worked exactly as you said, but currently it is not. I think it's a problem at my end, just trying to find out what it might be. I have checked the feature so many times now in the last few days, that I know it is not currently taking me to the right place most of the time. On certain topics it always takes me back to the same place, day after day. Yellow stars and blue dots - not on my version. Or at least, as a moderator I can't see them. I'm running version 10.18.

There is one particular topic which is now 7 pages long, and it always takes me to page 2 no matter how many times I check each page.

Unfortunately unless the issue can be replicated in the lab there would not be a way to find what the issue is and have not seen or heard of this issue before so it would be very difficult to be able to find a way to resolve this.
