most of the novice users who r always threatend by "some one hacking and blowing off their new super duper computer" bcuz they probably read and hear a lot about hacking on the web and from others...

LOL you must be kinda stupid not to have some kind of protection especially when having an "always on" connection like DSL or Cable. If you leave everything open you might as well have a sign saying hackers welcome. Some applications are just less intrusive like Zone Alarm is. I don't think it has anything to do with being a novice user.

the news media makes it sound like "if you don't have a firewall your going to have your idenity stolen". People like you and me know that if you have an always on connection that you should have some type of firewall. Anyway, on an average person's machine, why would a hacker bother?

They might bother just for the fun of it. Well what they call fun. I imagine a loft of people save their receipts of internet purchases etc, which might have CC numbers etc on them

They hack personal comps for the experience, that and there is like a 0.01% chance of them getting caught hacking into a personal computer
