Anyone know if the VB express, SQL express etc will be free when they are launched or will MS charge for them
Also now that VS2005 is released, anyone know when the express versions will be out of BETA

but anyway: if you only need a small db (which is all you can have with sql ex) why not just use mysql?

Express's are being launched 7th November, it's likely that they will
be around $100 but no doubt they will give some express editions away
with books etc.
And ub3rl337ch3ch: SQL Server Express is good for local development,
you can then move your db to a "full blown" SQL Server 2005
installation. And if you are using .NET to access SQL Server 2005 there
are a lot of reasons that you would want that over MySQL, CLR
integration etc.

*shrug* i suppose all of my programming is on an enterprise level, so i've never really looked at the smaller stuff...
and i've also never looked at mysql, so i didn't know about the limitations thereof... but if there's stuff that mssql can do that mysql can't, then i can understand the merits of sql ex... its the 4gig limit that makes me cringe...

SQL Server Express will be free and true a 4GB limit may cause problems when developing Enterprise Scale DB's. But you can always get the Developer Edition for very cheap (last one was $60 or so). Frankly, you cannot compare SQL 2005 with mySQL anymore, mySQL is nice for storing data but with the new features you can do so much more in sql, but that is my opinion, for something like a simple website either will work fine.
A nice thing with Express is that you can point to the data file directly so you can just upload your mdf and put the path in the connection string. No more host limitation them having to create db's etc.
Every one Express Edition for Visual Studio has been prices at $49 by the way.

free? they really want to strangle mysql... and it'll probably work if mysql is that limited.... except for the die-hard ms-haters that won't use it just because it has something to do with gatesey...

Well SQL Server Express is designed to replace MSDE, which is MS's
free, cutdown version of SQL Server 2000. So people have had a choice
of a free DB Engine from MS for years, but there are some licensing
limitation IIRC, I think you can only use MSDE in development, you have
to upgrade if you want to use it in production.

No you can use it in Production but you have to register it if you want to re-distribute it.
